Botox and Xeomin Northern Virginia, Vienna,Tysons Corner

Did you know there are different kinds of Botox? Here at Tysons Internal Medicine, we offer both BOTOX® and XEOMIN® treatments. Dr. Lorena Popp, founder of the practice, will personally handle your treatments and is both a board-certified internist and expert in Aesthetic Medicine. She can discuss the details of these treatments with you and help you decide which option is the best fit to meet your needs and specifications here in our Northern Virginia office.

BOTOX® and XEOMIN® are FDA-approved neurotoxins used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Although both treatments are used for similar purposes, there are some distinct differences between them that may influence your decision when choosing a treatment.

The Similarities

Both BOTOX® and XEOMIN® have been approved by the FDA for treating facial wrinkles. Both are administered via an injection and the results are long-lasting but not permanent. In order to sustain long-term results, patients usually need another dosage of treatment every three to four months.

Both neurotoxins work by relaxing the facial muscles and blocking nerve impulses that contract them.

The Differences

The primary difference between BOTOX® and XEOMIN® are the components that make up each one. XEOMIN® only contains one ingredient, known as botulinum toxin Type A. BOTOX®, however, is made up of many different kinds of proteins. XEOMIN® is considered the “purer” neurotoxin, and its singular ingredient means there is less chance that a patient will develop antibodies that will prevent it from producing the desired effects. Additionally, XEOMIN® does not have to be refrigerated before it is used, making it more cost effective and easier to distribute.

The only drawback XEOMIN® has when compared to BOTOX®, is that it can take longer for the effects to manifest. BOTOX® usually starts working within three days, whereas XEOMIN® can take up to four days.

Dr. Popp will discuss both options with you in depth and help decided which route is best for you. Although XEOMIN® has many advantages compared to BOTOX®, it is not suitable for every patient.

The Botox lip flip is a quick, affordable treatment that enhances the natural beauty of your lips. By injecting a small number of units, it gently relaxes the muscles around the upper and lower lip, revealing more of the lip’s inner surface for a fuller, lush appearance. Ideal for those seeking a subtle boost or an alternative to lip filler, it also helps reduce a gummy smile. The results are beautifully natural and can last up to three months. A lip flip requires between 10 and 15 units of Botox.

Frown Botox effectively softens the “11s” between the eyebrows, smoothing out the appearance of a furrowed or angry expression for a more refreshed and rejuvenated look. The treatment typically requires around 20 units, though the exact amount varies depending on the individual’s muscle mass. Results fully develop within 14 days, and it’s a popular choice for its eye-brightening and lifting effects.

Botox for the forehead is a highly popular treatment that smooths horizontal lines and creates a relaxed, refreshed look. It’s ideal for individuals with expressive foreheads. While younger candidates (18 and older) often choose this procedure as a preventative measure against future wrinkles, older men and women appreciate the rejuvenating effect it provides. For the most natural appearance, it’s recommended to treat both the forehead and frown lines, as the frown muscles pull down while the forehead muscles lift. On average, about 10 units are used for the forehead lines, but foreheads may require anywhere from 5 to 25 units, depending on muscle strength and individual needs. Maximum effects visible after 14 days.

Crow’s feet, often called “happy wrinkles,” are the fine lines that form around the eyes as we age, becoming more noticeable in our 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. They are caused by the movement of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which surrounds the eyes. While some people embrace these lines, others prefer a smoother look. Botox is a highly effective treatment for crow’s feet, typically requiring 20 to 25 units. Results begin to appear within 72 hours, with full effects visible at 14 days, and generally last 3 to 4 months.

Botox in the neck is an excellent solution for addressing the “turkey neck” appearance caused by the platysma muscle, a thin muscle tightly attached to the neck’s outer skin. When Botox is injected into the platysma, it relaxes the muscle, resulting in a smoother, more lifted neck and a defined jawline. This procedure typically requires around 40 units of Botox and can be combined with jawline Botox to further lift sagging jowls, enhancing the overall contour and rejuvenation. More details on jawline Botox are covered in the next section.

Botox along the jawline to lift jowls is a popular treatment at our practice. By strategically injecting small amounts of Botox along the jawline, this procedure helps lift sagging jowls and enhances the jawline’s definition, creating a more sculpted and sharper appearance. Typically, 30 to 40 units are needed, and the results last approximately four months.

This procedure is incredibly popular at our practice, especially among women who love the lifted, cat-eye effect. By injecting small amounts of Botox at the lateral part of the eyebrow—and occasionally at the medial part—it creates a beautifully lifted brow and a brighter, more open eye appearance. This treatment is perfect for individuals with aging eyes seeking rejuvenation, as well as younger clients with hooded eyes who desire a more lifted and defined look. This procedure usually requires between 4-12 units of Botox.

Bunny lines are the small horizontal wrinkles that appear on the bridge of the nose when we laugh deeply. Not everyone develops bunny lines, but for those who do, they can become more pronounced over time. Botox is an effective treatment for reducing the formation of these lines. It typically requires around six units of Botox, and the results last about 3 to 4 months.

Botox can also be used to subtly correct a slightly crooked nose and lift the tip by injecting a small amount at the base of the nose, between the two nostrils. This muscle is called depressor septi nasi. The best candidates for this treatment are individuals with a slightly droopy nose tip. 2-3 units is usually enough for this treatment- results should last about three months.

For individuals dissatisfied with the width of their nostrils or upper nose, Botox can be used to narrow them by injecting into the alar muscles on both sides. Additionally, Botox can be injected along the sides of the nose to slim the width of the tip. This correction typically requires between 4 to 8 units.

As we age, the chin area loses volume, often leading to a pebbly texture in the skin, particularly when talking, laughing, or making facial expressions. Botox in the chin can help smooth out this appearance and restore a more refined look to the lower face. Typically, 4 units are enough to achieve the desired effect, with results lasting about three months.

With aging, we develop lines that form below the corners of the mouth, which can make the mouth look droopy and give a tired or unhappy expression. By injecting Botox into these areas, it lifts the corners of the mouth, creating a more relaxed and cheerful appearance. This quick treatment can help restore a more youthful look.

Like all Botox treatments, you’ll begin to see results within 72 hours, with full effects visible after two weeks. For this procedure, about 8 units of Botox are typically required.
